Paris voted against SUVs. But only 6% of residents went to the polls.

Of the 1 Parisians registered, 374 took part in the ballot. With 532% of votes in favor, the majority expressed their desire to tax these behemoths of the Parisian streets.

The City of Paris recently orchestrated a major vote on February 4, inviting Parisians to vote on the place of the largest SUVs in the capital.

The question had to be answered: “For or against a specific tariff for heavy, bulky, polluting individual cars?” » which caused a lot of talk and annoyance in Paris and the Ile-de-France region.

In Paris-Centre, where the Marais is located, 62,67% voted for 37,33 against.

Over the past decade, average vehicle size and weight have soared, fueled by the rise of SUVs. The latter, according to Paris City Hall, now represent 40% of sales, and pose major challenges in terms of pollution and safety in sharing public space.

The reform, approved by the vote of Parisians, will be submitted to the Council of Paris and will come into force on September 1.

New York has its September 11 memorial, at the foot of Manhattan. Paris will have its November 13 memorial, in the Marais, just behind the City Hall, on the square in front of the Saint-Gervais church. Already, access to rue François-Miron has been blocked for buses and motorists. We will only pass there on foot.

Divine brunch at the foot of Notre-Dame

Of course, officially, it is not the Marais. But at Son de la Terre, a barge recently moored at the Montebello quay (5th), the 4th arrondissement is in sight. Moreover, this one is incredible: on one side, it is Notre-Dame flooded with sunlight; on the other, the quays, the book sellers, the walkers, the joggers.

Saka, a cocktail bar like in Tokyo

Here is an address which gives the measure of the transformation of the Marais. And it's enough to silence the grumpy people whose mantra is: “It was better before…” No, everything was not better “before” in the Marais. Besides, there was no American bar like Saka, which cultivates a form of excellence that can only be found in Japan.
