On the ground floor of a building in Haut Marais, the terrace of the café-restaurant Le Progrès is always full. But two floors higher, it's a whole different universe. Here, far from the noisy crowd, people passionate about music, composition and musical production meet in a cozy atmosphere. Welcome to Atelier 440, a music school which provides courses and workshops in musical creation and “MAO”, that is to say computer-assisted music.

In this living room of a Haussmann apartment bathed in light and under 3,50 meters of ceiling with moldings, Versailles parquet flooring, small wooden coffee tables and comfortable armchairs, the atmosphere is reminiscent of a tea room. However, it is indeed a classroom, equipped with the most modern technical and computer equipment, which combines history and tradition with the cutting edge of technology.

Twelve teachers come to this cocoon, in turn, to speak to small privileged groups of four students. The lessons promote the marriage between tradition and modernity: from the study of classical composers and their heritage (Film Music training) to the most current techniques of sound synthesis and sound design (Electronic Music training), including the song in all its genres (Songwriting training).

The course philosophy is based on two ideas: transversality and decompartmentalization. Whatever the composition training chosen, the plurality of speakers provides a complementarity of approaches and sensitivities. Letting go and theory are the ying and yang of creativity, both necessary.

Man of principles; Stéphane, who set up this music school, especially did not want the pyramid organization that he encountered in many schools where he worked. Each educational worker is independent, in direct contractual relationship with the students. “Of course this complicates the invoicing of courses a little, but I am very happy to work with a team of artists – all very involved in the project. Like an orchestra conductor, I set the tempo and some directions because I have the vision of the overall score. All the participants are in tune with me on the idea of not doing compromise on the quality of the project, its artistic and educational requirements and scope.

Upon registration, Atelier 440 offers training all year round, from November to July on a weekly basis, and also some short training courses.

The only jazz club in the Marais, 38Riv is the temple of cool and swing. Rue de Rivoli, between Saint-Paul and Hôtel de Ville, its vaulted cellars are the home base of the new jazz scene. Every evening, the magic happens.

Divine brunch at the foot of Notre-Dame

Divine brunch at the foot of Notre-Dame

Of course, officially, it is not the Marais. But at Son de la Terre, a barge recently moored at the Montebello quay (5th), the 4th arrondissement is in sight. Moreover, this one is incredible: on one side, it is Notre-Dame flooded with sunlight; on the other, the quays, the book sellers, the walkers, the joggers.

Saka, a cocktail bar like in Tokyo

Here is an address which gives the measure of the transformation of the Marais. And it's enough to silence the grumpy people whose mantra is: “It was better before…” No, everything was not better “before” in the Marais. Besides, there was no American bar like Saka, which cultivates a form of excellence that can only be found in Japan.
