Africa is back in the Marais with, like every year, the international contemporary African art and design fair AKAA (Also Known As Africa Fair). A very specialized meeting which, for seven years, has welcomed the crème de la crème of African artists and the diasporas.
Under the Carreau du Temple hall, there is no question of primitivism, fetishization or hackneyed clichés but of 130 painters, photographers, sculptors, performers, etc., who know, visit and explore Africa beyond the stereotypes. Here, for three days, 40 international galleries represent sure values: Ousmane Bâ (Foreign Agent gallery), Alexis Peskine (October Gallery), Sanda Amadou (Open Art Exchange), Barbara Wildenboer (Ceci n'est pas un cube blanc gallery) , Matthew Eguavoen (Afikaris gallery), Gael Maski (Angalia gallery).

The theme chosen this year by Armelle Dakouo, the artistic director of AKAA, is movement, that, for example, of the photos of Aurélie Tiffy (Rieffle gallery). There will also be performances by Annabel Guérédrat and David Gumbs, who is a videographer, as well as monumental installations in the nave of the Grande Halle, by Malian artist Abdoulaye Konaté (gallery 38) and Nnenna Okore (October Gallery).

As a bonus, AKAA is offering round tables this year that will attempt to answer difficult questions. Why is the African art market less dynamic in France than in England? Why are some artists still underrated? And why are some collectors less inclined to pay sums that are not extravagant when it comes to works from the dark continent? A neocolonial bent perhaps…
