It’s well known: “It was better before!” » Nostalgics and other “retromaniacs” will therefore be there for the 22nd vintage fair, at the Halle du Carreau du Temple, in the Marais, in Paris. No less than 100 merchants will share the 2m000 to exhibit clothing, cars, watches, jewelry, furniture and designer objects. The event is part of a responsible social and sustainable economy, with an ecological concern for limiting CO2 production.
Because overproduction is everywhere. An example ? Each French person buys on average 9 kilos of clothes per year and recycles 3. On the other hand, with “fast fashion” we buy 60% more clothes than 15 years ago. Improving recycling is therefore crucial because the clothing industry is very polluting. So, “vintage” is not only cool but also virtuous.
But actually, what is vintage? The word finds its origins in the world of spirits and indicates that a product is more than twenty years old. Today the term (which itself has been recycled!) has invaded the world of clothing and decorative objects. Thrift stores and decoration stores focus on hunting, hunting and selecting rare, even exceptional pieces. A real sport!
There are around twenty shops dedicated to the genre in the Marais. And Le Marais Mood recently dedicated a podcast on this phenomenon.
Vintage today represents an ecological bias. Because the consumption of second-hand clothing considerably reduces CO2 emissions, as well as the consumption of fertilizers and pesticides used in the production of plants used for the manufacture of new clothing. Not to mention the saving of billions of liters of water allowed.
The vintage trend can also be explained by the public's disposition, which is ready for this change: 50% of women aged 18 to 25 say they want to buy more second-hand items in order to protect the environment according to thredUP (the site American vintage resale). Moreover, in 2019, vintage brought in more than $28 billion in the United States. By 2023, this phenomenon could reach 53 billion dollars.
Worried about seeing this wave overwhelm them, the luxury sectors like the vintage fast fashion sector are taking this trend more and more seriously. Some teachers do not hesitate to open corners dedicated to old pieces. Much late for the Vintage Show which, therefore, reaches its twenty-second edition!
