International Day for Combating Violence Against Women

November 25, 2024, is an important day in the global fight against violence against women . Established nearly a quarter of a century ago, this international day aims to highlight the persistent challenges faced by women and girls in many societies.

Alarming statistics reveal that every hour hundreds of women experience various forms of abuse, ranging from verbal harassment to serious physical assault and humiliation.

These acts, often rooted in deep-rooted gender biases, occur in both public and private spaces.

The organizers of this annual event call for collective awareness and concrete actions to combat these injustices. They stress the urgency of reforming discriminatory laws and challenging harmful traditions that perpetuate this violence.

Violence against women in figures: 

In 2023, 271,000 victims of violence committed by their partner or ex-partner were recorded, representing a 10% increase compared to 2024.

• In 2022, nearly 240 women were victims of violence committed by their (ex-)partner, an increase of 000% compared to 14

• 118 women died as a result of domestic violence in 20221

• 267 women were victims of attempted femicide in 20221

Sexual violence

87 women victims of sexual violence were recorded by law enforcement in 000, a 2022% increase compared to 13

• According to a survey, 217 women reported having been victims of rape, attempted rape and/or sexual assault in 000

• Complaints and convictions
Only 15% of victims of domestic violence and 6% of victims of sexual violence say they have filed a complaint1

• 37 perpetrators of domestic violence were convicted, 800% of whom were men94

These alarming figures show a continuing increase in reported violence, despite efforts to raise awareness and combat this phenomenon.
